Threonine

An essential amino acid, meaning the body cannot manufacture it on its own and must receive it from an outside source. Threonine is vital for the production of purines, which break down uric acid, itself a by product of protein digestion. An excess of uric acid may be responsible for gout, a form of arthritis, and other health problems. Threonine is also vital for the production of the nonessential amino acid, glycine.

Threonine is found mainly in the heart, skeletal muscles and central nervous system. Threonine is vital for collagen and elastin formation. When threonine is combined with methionine and aspartic acid, it aids lipotropic and liver function. Threonine is very helpful for prevention of fatty buildup in the liver. Threonine boosts production of antibodies, which in turn improves the immune system. Vital for protein utilization in one's diet, as well as maintaining the appropriate protein balance.

Caution

Vegetarians tend to be deficient in threonine, since their principle food sources, such as grains, are very low in it.
