Mucus, chronicA chronic mucus problem is a symptom more than a disease. Excess mucus can appear throughout the mucous membranes, though we usually relate it to the nose and chest. In the sinuses, mucus problems become evident as a continually runny nose, sneezing, stuffiness and a nasal tone of voice. Postnasal drip is often a sign of a chronic infection taking place. A chest full of mucus causes rattling and coughing which can bring up sputum. Excess mucus makes breathing difficult and is often accompanied by wheezing. Mucus helps the body to rid itself of dirt, bacteria and other toxic wastes accumulated in the mucous membranes. Mucus, in itself, is not a bad thing that should be eliminated from the body at all cost. Mucus has many protective properties for both the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. Most excess mucus problems are the result of a chronic irritation or inflammation, from allergies, hay fever and asthma. Chronic bronchitis or sinus infection are other sources of recurring or continual mucus production, as are heredity, cigarette smoking, nutrient deficiencies and toxic heavy metal accumulations in the body. Supplements and herbsAlong with maintaining a healthy diet to support the immune system and prevent mucus production, supplements can help break down mucous membranes. Vitamins C and E, and zinc citrate help prevent the build-up of excess mucus. Vitamin C should be taken with bioflavonoids, which makes it more effective. Zinc can be taken as a lozenge. Some brands may taste better than others, so you may have to try a couple out before finding the one you like. An effective remedy for eliminating, or at least reducing phlegm from the respiratory tract, is reduced L-glutathione. A powerful antioxidant, it dissolves mucus into smaller fragments. It can also hook up with toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury, copper, aluminum, arsenic and cadmium in the body and remove them through the kidneys. Also, cod liver oil is an excellent supplement for boosting immunity and preventing mucus build-up. Mucus should not necessarily be eliminated from the body. It has many protective properties, but herbs can help with chronic excess mucus.
