Balanitis

Inflammation of the head of the penis and sometimes the foreskin. The area is itchy, red, and sometimes moist. In infants, balanitis can be caused by the irritation of wet diapers or damp clothing. It can also be caused by a bacterial or yeast infection; injury; and irritation from chemicals in clothing, condoms, or spermicide. The condition is most common in men with diabetes, as sugar in the urine encourages the microbes to multiply.

In infants, treat balanitis by changing diapers frequently and keeping the penis clean and dry. Disposable diapers, which retain fluid without allowing air circulation, may contribute to the problem. If you are using cotton diapers, detergent residues may be causing irritation. Perfumes or additives in the soap you use to bathe the baby, or powder you use to dry the baby, may also be a problem.
In adults, it is advisable to see a doctor for a checkup, as the symptoms of balanitis are similar to other more serious diseases.

Supplements and herbs

Clean and dry the penis thoroughly, then apply aloe vera gel.

Aromatherapy

Wash the penis regularly with a solution of 4 drops of essential oil of tea tree in a basin of warm water. This is an effective antiseptic and antifungal agent.

What else you can do

  • Always wear cotton underwear.
  • Try changing your detergent to see if the condition is improved; always rinse underwear thoroughly.
  • Avoid scented soaps and talc.
  • Use hypoallergenic condoms and spermicides.
  • If your doctor confirms a yeast infection as the cause of balanitis, treat it. Make sure your partners are also treated, if necessary, as the infection may be passed back and forth between you.
